Is the current format of peace process working? Is an alliance with Israel damaging to America? Can Israel change its ways?
Is enough pressure being brought to bear on Netanyahu and Israel by the US Congress?
Peter Lavelle CrossTalking with Soraya Sepahpour-Ulrich and Norman Finkelstein.
Peter Lavelle the Cross Talk host argues that it is time to start a new format, because he sees that the Peace talks ain’t going nowhere.
Norman Finkelstein argues that the Peace talks is going somewhere and that there will be an agreement but it will not be a just one. He believes “the Palestinians have never been weaker” as they are right now and this provides an historic opportunity for the US and EU to put the screws on Palestine and get a deal on Israeli terms. He thinks the EU will put pressure on Israel saying: “You better get serious, if you don’t resolve the conflict, we are going to cease subsidizing the West Bank projects.” Finkelstein believes that Tzipi Livni, the Israeli Justice Minister, has set out the final borders for Israel as being the Apartheid Wall that Israel has built.
Ms. Soraya argues that Norman Finkelstein is quite likely off the mark here in his insistence that Israel will be content with 10% of the West Bank, behind the apartheid wall. She thinks Norman should know better this is unlikely to happen as currently Israel is insisting on controlling the Jordan Valley and the border with Jordan and Syria as well.
Soraya Sepahpour-Ulrich does not believe that the Israelis will even agree to a Peace Agreement on what the West see as Israeli terms even with pressure from the Americans on the Palestinians and the E.U.’s threat to pull funding if there is no deal. She believes that the Israelis will not sign a Peace Treaty on any terms because they face no pressure from the U.S. Congress. The US Congress is powerful. Congress is not working for the American people. Congress takes its orders from Israel and this is treason she notes. She also reminds Finkelstein about US negotiator Martin Indyk’s reputation and the various Israel Lobbies and Think Tanks that run things in America. Ms. Ulrich may be more correct in her pessimism. She adds, things are not going to change unless there is awareness, the American people are ignorant, because the Media is squarely in the pocket of the Neocons. All the pro-Israeli Think Tanks actually turn out the policies and they are implemented. Ms. Soraya Rocks!
Peter Levelle insists, there is not enough pressure on Netanyahu and the Congress is very close to Netanyahu’s position.
Editor’s Note : I quote our UK correspondent Stuart Littlewood here, Palestine does have options, why is nobody talking about going to the ICC?
The U.N.’s precious gift empowering legal action is being squandered while Israel, with US/UK/EU acquiescence, continues to seize land and resources with impunity.
The Palestinians must walk away from these bogus talks and put the blame squarely where it belongs – on Israeli and US dishonesty. They must bring charges of war crimes against Israel in the International Criminal Court.
America should get out of the way and turn the matter of Israel’s crimes over to the UN/International Criminal Court where it belongs, at the same time giving the American public an honest explanation.
