Bringing The Drone War Home, Literally

Droned and Confused

Hear a Drone, There A Drone

Drones ‘R Us

The Obama Administration today announced a policy change in its legal framework for fighting the Drone War, along with a change in its terror lexicon. John Brennan hit the ground running along with the Justice Department in an effort to implement these changes to deal with imminent threats- overseas, and especially now here at home.

“Short term security imperatives must be balanced with long term policy objectives”, said Jay Varner, White House spokesman. “The rise of current domestic threats has forced a re-think of current methods, meaning a need for overlap between the Justice Dept, the US military, and local law enforcement on a case-by-case basis.  A whole new department may be in order to facilitate these changes, falling under the Homeland Security rubric, but officials are hoping that The National Counterterrorism Center might be sufficient to handle the job with a greatly expanded role,” he said.

Droning Us To Death

Officials note that a name has long been needed for Americans not copacetic with Obama rule– “Recalcitrants” is the new term for what used to be called “dissidents” until that category was taken over by right-wingers who have no problem with US foreign policy, only the US government.

Just days ago at a small press conference Obama complained.

“There’s just too many of ‘em, and they all own weapons. Due process certainly isn’t due when we’re dealing with these kinds of numbers. The Justice Dept has to tangle with The National Counterterrorism Center, and the CIA as well about specific drone tech. We’re going to streamline the process to save time for everybody because let’s face it, an imminent threat is just that– imminent. Say we’ve got a Recalcitrant at the bottom of a West Virginia coal mine and we need to take him out. We can send a drone in rather than destroy the whole coal mine. We need the flexibility to do just this type of thing at a moment’s notice, and that’s exactly why these changes will be put in place as soon as possible.”

Other authorities hastened to fill in the blanks left unaddressed. “Great care will be taken to keep collateral damage to an absolute minimum. For example, we wouldn’t use a drone to target a car traveling on the freeway- we’d wait until it exited to a secondary road before we’d make the strike” John Brennan told Ray LaHood and an audience at the Dept. of Transportation.

Drone War Mission Creep- Given An Inch, They Take Miles!

It is not known when the changes will be made or even begun, but broad congressional authority will ensure that the changes will be achieved in a timely manner when the Obama Administration signals it’s ready.

Sign this petition: “The secret U.S. government assassination program that targets American citizens abroad and kills them without judicial review is not ‘legal,’ ‘ethical,’ or ‘wise’ as the White House claimed. It is wrong, and it should be stopped.”

There may not be the political will in Washington, DC, to address this clearly unconstitutional power grab by the executive branch, but as citizens it is our duty to say this is clearly illegal, immoral and a deplorable desecration of the rule of law.
