One Land, Two Peoples, Three Religions – 2

Editor’s Note : Of course, the deceivers, plotters and those who weave webs to deceive will tell us a lot of things, mostly contradictory, and all of it lies.

The motto of Israeli Intelligence agency Mossad “by way of deception we make war.” Not only has deception always been the name of Zionism’s game, it knows no other.

Stuart Littlewood observes “Thankfully there are signs that America is at last waking up to the fact that uncritical support of Israel has serious implications for other US interests, and a popular undercurrent is beginning to organize, angered by the realization that billions of taxpayers’ dollars, in the form of aid, have been squandered on Israel’s illegal settlement programme.”

“Israel is on the wrong side of divine order, destiny, and human history and in the end like all Oppressors and Empires it too shall perish, but only if we as a human race inform ourselves on the issue, enlighten others, and unite in one single voice:  “Free Palestine” ~ Mohamed Khodr

“To smile when confronted with the most severe oppression, is an act of Resistance rooted in unparalleled beauty.”  ~ Jonathan Azaziah

“The most basic form of deception is fabricating the false symmetry between occupier and occupied, oppressor and victim. The violence of the powerful Israeli occupation army using live ammunition, tanks and helicopter gunships is equated with Palestinians protesting against the loss of their rights, lands and lives.” — Hanan Ashrawi

I saw these words, by veteran Palestinian legislator Dr Hanan Ashrawi, and wrote them down because they so eloquently spoke my own thoughts.

The Palestinians’ plight cries out for simple human justice – which the mighty Powers seem unable or unwilling to dispense. These educated, generous people, if freed and restored to their lands and resources, would undoubtedly thrive as a nation. Instead they are trapped in a downward spiral of hardship and despair created by 20th century international schemers. The shame of it is that our 21st century leaders seem no better, only worse.

At the time of my 2005 visit Sharon was making great political capital of pulling hard-line Jewish settlers out of Gaza. In the background, apparently unnoticed by the world’s media, his government was busy tightening its grip on Jerusalem, expanding Israel’s ‘envelope’, bulldozing more Palestinian suburbs, dividing and annexing even more Palestinian land for illegal settlement, and blockading the remaining pockets to render them unviable for the future formation of a Palestinian state.

As always, the excuse was to ensure the security of the state of Israel, hence the Separation Wall – or “Apartheid Wall” as it has become internationally known. Noam Chomsky, a well-regarded academic in the US and himself a Jew, is scathing. “If the goal were security, Israel would have built the fence a few kilometers inside its borders,” he said. “It could then be a mile high, patrolled on both sides by the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces), mined with nuclear weapons, utterly impenetrable. Perfect security.

“The problem would be that it would not take valuable Palestinian land and resources (including control of water), drive out the population, and lay the basis for still further expansion as Palestinians flee from the dungeons that are left, like the town of Qalqilya.”

The world waits with rising anger for the UN to do its job as the world’s police force and dismantle the Wall wherever it strays on to Palestinian territory. But as we’ve seen, the UN talks the talk but cannot, or will not, walk the walk.

Thankfully there are signs that America is at last waking up to the fact that uncritical support of Israel has serious implications for other US interests, and a popular undercurrent is beginning to organize, angered by the realization that billions of taxpayers’ dollars, in the form of aid, have been squandered on Israel’s illegal settlement programme.

The real thing: the armored Caterpillar

And the internet, which speaks the truth that mainstream media dare not, brings knowledge and empowerment to ordinary people. If their sense of decency is offended by politicians and big business, folk can now mete out punishment of their own – for example by boycotting the goods of multinationals that invest in Israel.

We arrived in Jerusalem at the time of the London bombings, and heard the British prime minister, Tony Blair, on CNN complaining that the terrorists who committed the London atrocities were trying to destroy the British way of life and ruin the economy. How ironic. Isn’t that exactly what has been happening to the Palestinians, with our connivance, for decades?

A BBC TV documentary Israel and the Arabs: Elusive Peace, screened October 2005, revealed that President Bush had given the White House nod of approval to Sharon’s continuing land-grab policy – an extraordinary piece of news, which seems to have gone otherwise unreported in the west. Nothing could be more calculated to stoke the fires of hatred.

One of the greatest propaganda lies circulated by the Israeli regime and its supporters is how Arafat turned down former Israeli prime minister Barak’s so-called ‘generous offer’ in 2000 – another of the myths Israel loves to peddle.

The West Bank and the Gaza Strip, seized by Israel in 1967 and occupied ever since, comprise just 22% of pre-partition Palestine. When the Palestinians signed the Oslo Agreement in 1993 they agreed to accept the 22% and recognize Israel within ‘Green Line’ borders (i.e. the 1949 Armistice Line established after the Arab-Israeli War), thus conceding 78% of the land that was originally theirs. It was an astonishing compromise on the part of the Palestinians.

But it wasn’t enough for Barak. His ‘generous offer’ required the inclusion of 69 Israeli settlements within that 22% remnant. It was plain for all to see on the map that these settlement blocs created impossible borders and already severely disrupted Palestinian life in the West Bank. Barak also demanded that the Palestinian territories be placed under “Temporary Israeli Control”, meaning Israeli military and administrative control indefinitely. His ‘generous offer’ also gave Israel control over all the border crossings of the new Palestinian State.

What nation in the world would accept that?

The truth contained in Barak’s maps was veiled by propaganda spin. At Taba the following year, he produced a revised map. The Palestinians considered it a basis for negotiation but Barak repudiated it after his election defeat. You don’t have to take my word for it – the facts are well documented and explained by organizations such as Gush Shalom.

Israel pins the blame for the continuing peace breakdown on the Palestinians’ refusal to accept Barak’s oh-so-generous terms, a PR lie that goes unchallenged in mainstream media.

The Palestinians aren’t alone in their fight. In October 2005 Iran’s President Ahmadinejad made that crystal clear when he said in a speech to the Teheran Conference: “The issue of Palestine…. will end only when all of Palestine will have a government belonging to the Palestinian people. The refugees must return to their homes, and there must be a government that has come to power by the will of the [Palestinian] people. And, of course those [i.e. the Jews] who came to this country from far away to plunder it have no right to decide anything for the [Palestinian] people.”

Tough talk like this from the east always ruffles the feathers of political plotters and schemers in the west and provokes a “categorical condemnation”. But it must be plain even to them that Islam will not rest, and there’ll be no peace, until the occupation ends, justice is seen to be done and proper restoration is made to the Palestinians.

Anata in the West Bank — Nothing for these kids to smile about really. The Israeli occupation had scheduled those fine Palestinian homes in the background for demolition for not having ”building permits”. However, under Israel’s policy of limiting the Palestinians’ natural growth building permits are not granted and residents have to build their houses without licences. [photo: Stuart Littlewood]

If western powers want good relations they will have to bite the bullet and intervene to right the wrongs they engineered. Their scorn when Ahmadinejad said the regime occupying Jerusalem “must vanish from the page of time”, which Zionist propagandists insist was a threat to “wipe Israel off the map”, is hollow when they know full well that Israel’s policy for decades has been to drive the Palestinians out of their homeland, erase their culture and antiquities, make life intolerable for those who remain and suffocate any possibility of a viable Palestinian state. In short, Israel has been very busy indeed in its efforts to wipe Palestine off the map.

And when Israel talks of security against terrorism the West surely doesn’t need reminding that several Israeli prime ministers themselves came up through the terrorist ranks to be welcomed in the drawing rooms of the White House and Downing Street. Today Britain and the US strive to provide a safe haven for Israel’s worst gangsters and thugs.

As always, one man’s terrorist is another’s freedom fighter.
